External Corporate Blogs

An external corporate blog is a publicly-viewable corporate blog where the company’s employees or spokespersons share their opinions. This type of corporate blog is often used to promote new services and products, to react to public criticism, or to clarify some policies. It is often more informal than traditional press releases although corporate blogs aim to accomplish the same goals as press releases. Essentially they are a public relations tool and can be biased, but they also offer more honest opinions than traditional communication channels. They also add a different level of credibility that is often not found in corporate websites, and can interact with consumers at a more personal and informal level.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and is one of the most popular innovations of Web 2.0. Its content is free and written collaboratively by anyone who has access to the internet. Created in 2001, Wikipedia has since become the internet’s largest and most popular reference site. It is actively updated in over a hundred languages, and the English Wikipedia contains over one million articles.

One of the main criticisms Wikipedia receives is its inconsistency and the unauthoritative way submissions are received. Anyone can edit the articles, even under an anonymous name. To ensure quality and accurate content, edits and submissions are monitored by staff and volunteers, but it’s still prone to inaccurate information. Citing Wikipedia as a reference is usually discouraged.

Bittorrent

Bittorent is a peer to peer protocol for downloading files online. It’s open source, meaning anyone can modify the code and redistribute it. Currently there are many free Bittorrent programs, each with their own features.

The purpose of Bittorrent is the massive distribution of files; anyone who has a copy of a popular program, music or video file can make it available to the public. Every client, or Bittorrent user, acts as a server. The files for download are broken into fragments which are served from various locations. The network of downloaders provides bandwidth and data to other users. Thus, the more popular the file is, the faster it is served because there are more users that provide bandwidth and locations to download the file fragments. The service gets better and better as more people use it.

Google AdSense

The Google AdSense program allows you to sell advertising space for ads on your website. The best part about it is that these ads aren’t just any ads chosen by Google, but ads that are relevant to your website’s content. This service is free and you earn money each time someone clicks on an ad.

AdSense has become very popular among noncommercial websites. All you need to do is sign up, make space on your site for the ads, and copy the code from Google into your site. You can even customize the ads so that they are color-coordinated with your website’s theme. You get a small fee every time a person clicks on the ad, but the amount varies. The amount of money you can make from AdSense depends on the traffic of your site and its focus. If your site is about a very specific topic, there’s a high chance that Google will show ads that will appeal to the readers who visit your site.

RSS

RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is a way to get easy access to website updates, headlines, and content. RSS is used by applications or computer programs that organize the content for easy reading. RSS is used by those who follow websites whose content changes unpredictably such as news sites, community sites, and blogs. Repeatedly going to these sites one by one to check for updates is tiring and tedious. RSS solves this by having the site’s author keep a list of notifications on their site, which is called an “RSS Feed”. People who are interested in finding out the updates can check this list. Special applications called RSS aggregators or RSS readers can automatically access the RSS feeds of the websites you subscribe to and organizes the content for you.
