Bittorrent

Bittorent is a peer to peer protocol for downloading files online. It’s open source, meaning anyone can modify the code and redistribute it. Currently there are many free Bittorrent programs, each with their own features.

The purpose of Bittorrent is the massive distribution of files; anyone who has a copy of a popular program, music or video file can make it available to the public. Every client, or Bittorrent user, acts as a server. The files for download are broken into fragments which are served from various locations. The network of downloaders provides bandwidth and data to other users. Thus, the more popular the file is, the faster it is served because there are more users that provide bandwidth and locations to download the file fragments. The service gets better and better as more people use it.
